The Intergovernmental Authority on Development IGAD officially launched its Security Sector Program in Addis Ababa on Thursday.
The IGAD Security Sector Program (ISSP) is a restructured new project replacing the previous IGAD Capacity Building Program against Terrorism (ICPAT) and has a broader mandate.
The ISSP is aimed at building national capacity to resist terrorism and other related crimes in promoting regional security cooperation.
The IGAD Capacity Building Program against Terrorism (ICPAT) was launched in 2006 with the aim of building the capacity of member states in preventing and fighting terrorism.
Through its course ICPAT has built a foundation in the fight against terrorism.
ICPAT has been working in enhancing judicial capacity, optimizing counter terrorism cooperation and coordination, enhancing border control management, and promoting strategic cooperation among others.
Because the region is facing serious security matters IGAD needs to restructure ICPAT and change it with a new program that has a broader mandate.
Hence, the IGAD Security Sector Program (ISSP) was launched Thursday with the aim of tackling border security threats.
ISSP deals with four main pillars: counter terrorism, transitional organized crime, maritime security and security institutions’ capacity building.
The program has officially been launched by Prime Minister of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia, Abduwali Mohammed Ali in Addis Ababa.
